In the middle of the story, the house reads a poem that speaks of nature and war. Soon after finishing the poem, the house begins to die. Behind the dog whirred angry mice, angry at having to pick up mud, angry at the inconvenience (Bradbury 2). He describes the house standing alone in a city of rubble and ashand the one house left standing (Bradbury 1). People are able to cook their own toast to the way they want. The house, with all of its technological advances had no idea it was no longer serving anyone. . The publication date of this story, May 6, 1950, is temporally significant as well.
